Sweden’s High Coast (Höga Kusten) — the world’s highest coastline

When people think of Sweden, they often picture charming red cottages, endless forests, and cozy fika breaks. But tucked along the eastern shoreline is something truly unique: the world’s highest coastline. Rising an incredible 938 feet (286 meters) above sea level, the High Coast (Höga Kusten) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and one of the most breathtaking hikes our family has ever done.

A Landscape Shaped by the Ice Age
Over 10,000 years ago, glaciers pressed down on this land with such immense weight that it sank deep into the earth’s crust. When the ice began to melt, the land slowly rebounded — and continues to rise today at nearly 1 cm per year. What was once seabed is now towering cliffs, caves, and ridges overlooking the Baltic Sea.

At Skuleberget National Park, you can literally walk through history. Each level of the mountain reveals what the coastline looked like thousands of years ago. Our favorite stop? The cave formed 8,500 years ago by crashing waves when this very spot was at sea level.

The Hike: Family-Friendly, With Options for Everyone
We took the Grotto Cave Trail, an intermediate route that winds through rocky steps, ladders, and rewarding overlooks. Our two daughters who came along loved the adventure (and yes — learned the lesson that snacks before hiking are a must!).

What we loved most about Skuleberget is the variety:

  • 🚡 A lift for those who want the views without the climb.
  • 🚶‍♀️ Easier walking trails around the backside of the mountain.
  • 🧗 Expert rock-climbing routes straight up the face for thrill-seekers.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned climber, there’s a path for you.

The Views + Swedish Tradition at the Top
At the summit, we were rewarded with sweeping views of the Baltic Sea and surrounding mountains. To make it even sweeter, we enjoyed a true Swedish tradition: waffles with cream, raspberry jam, and golden berries — the perfect post-hike fika.

Tips for Visitors

  • 📍 Location: Just an hour north of Härnösand (where we bought our stuga) along Sweden’s E4 highway.
  • 🕒 Time: Our loop took about 3 hours (including a fika break).
  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family: Great for older kids, adventurous younger ones, and anyone up for an intermediate challenge.
  • 🏡 Don’t miss: The Naturum visitor center, which shares the fascinating history and geology of the High Coast.

Why You Should Visit the High Coast
The High Coast is more than just a hike — it’s a chance to see geology in action, enjoy stunning Nordic landscapes, and connect with Swedish culture. For us, it was a perfect blend of outdoor adventure, family memories, and heritage just an hour from our summer home.

If you ever make your way to Sweden, this is one destination you cannot miss. 🌍✨
