When you buy a home abroad, the adventure doesn’t stop with the keys. Furnishing it becomes its own story—and for us, setting up our Swedish lakefront stuga meant jumping right into Swedish furniture culture.
First Stop: Local Shopping in Härnösand
We started our search in a small shop in Härnösand, the town where Lina grew up. Walking in, we quickly realized it was Sweden’s version of Pottery Barn—beautiful, high-quality furniture with a price tag to match. The pieces were stunning, but the long wait times (six to eight weeks) just didn’t fit our timeline. Since we needed furniture right away, we decided to keep looking.
Price-Friendly Finds
At our second stop, we found a store much more in line with our budget. Beds, couches, and other essentials were available for same-day pickup—which was a huge win. Unfortunately, the couch we loved wouldn’t be delivered for a couple of weeks. So, we decided it was time to make the ultimate Swedish furniture pilgrimage: IKEA.
The Big City Run: IKEA in Sundsvall
For those familiar with Sweden, the closest IKEA to Härnösand is in Sundsvall—about an hour south.
At IKEA, we struck gold. We found a couch, a bed, silverware, a chair, and even a chaise—all ready to bring back the same day. If you’ve ever furnished a home from scratch, you know how big of a win that is!

Making the House a Home
Loading up our finds and driving back to the stuga, we felt a wave of excitement. These weren’t just pieces of furniture—they were the building blocks of making this Swedish house feel like our home. And of course, the day ended the best way possible: with family, celebration, and even a round of boat bingo.
